The Queen's Gaels will look to defend the Forsyth Cup, when the Gaels open the 2019 season this weekend against the York Lions on Saturday at 2pm and Nipissing at 2pm on Sunday.

Their title defence will be lead by fifth-year outside hitter Zac Hutcheson a key leader on the Gaels championship squad. A first team OUA All-Star selection last season, Hutcheson ranked second in the OUA in both kills (266) and points (319.5).

Alongside Hutcheson, third-year setter Zane Grossinger had a breakout 2018-19 campaign leading the OUA in assists with 718 en route to also being named a first team OUA All-Star.

Second-year players Shane Gabel and Adam Boljkovac are also poised to make strong contributions on both offence and defence for Queen's this season.

An OUA all-rookie last season, Gabel returns for his sophomore season for Queens, after registering 47 kills and 27 digs in 15 matches played in 2018. Boljkovac accounted for 133 kills and 52 digs last season in 16 matches.

Fourth-year libero Lukas Kaufman will play an important defensive role for the Gaels. Kaufman led the team with 121 digs and played in all 18 games in 2018-19.

The Gaels will be without top defender veteran Dylan Hunt who led Queens with 46 total blocks in his fifth-year last season. Along with Bolijkovac, Hunt earned second-team All-Stars honours. Third-year Mitchell Neuert will look to fill the void in the middle.

Gabriel deGroot

Gabriel deGroot had a dream rookie season as Gaels head coach leading Queen's to a 3-2 victory over McMaster to win the Forsyth Cup. The Gaels led the OUA East Division with a 15-3 record to capture their first OUA title since 2011-12 and deGroot took home coach of the year honors.
