Strong opening half not enough for Gaels against No.8 Ottawa

OTTAWA, Ont. (January 19, 2019) – The Queen's Men's Basketball Team (8-8) fell to the Ottawa Gee-Gees (12-4) 84-68 on Saturday Night at Montpetit Hall.

GAME FLOW
Coming off a tough loss last night to an undefeated No.1 Carleton team, the Gaels bounced back well in the first quarter against a red-hot Gee-Gees team which was 8-2 in their last 10 games coming into this matchup. The two teams were close in every major statistical in the first quarter as the lead switched back and forth throughout, with the Gaels edging Ottawa by a single point as the quarter ended 23-22.

The game remained tight in the second quarter, this time with the Gee-Gees edging out a 1-point lead headed to the half at 41-40. The Gaels were led in the first half by Quinton Gray with 20 points and five three-pointers on seven shots while Jaz Bains had five assists. Meanwhile, Calvin Epistola led the Gee-Gees over the first 20 minutes with 18 points and six rebounds.

The Gee-Gees got a jump on the Gaels to open the third quarter, going on a 9-2 run which would prove costly as the game went on, with the Gaels eventually finding themselves trailing 62-53 headed to the fourth quarter.

The Gaels were never able to recover in the fourth and final quarter, as the Gee-Gees gradually put the game out of reach outscoring the Gaels 22-15 in the frame and besting the Gaels by a final score of 84-68. The Gaels were led statistically by Gray with 25 points and Tanner Graham with 11 rebounds, while the Gee-Gees were led by Calvin Epistola with 24 points and eight rebounds.

Crucially, the Gee-Gees were more efficient than the Gaels from behind the arc, especially in the second half, as the home team out-shot the Gaels 45% to 32% from three-point range. The Gaels also turned over the ball thirteen times in comparison to the Gee-Gees' six.

MUST SEE MOMENTS BY THE NUMBERS

7 –There were seven lead changes in the game (all in the first half).
