Gaels pick up important win over visiting Toronto

KINGSTON, Ont. – (September 15, 2018) The Queen's Gaels (5-1-0) defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues (3-3-0) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Goals from Junior Kwame Addai and Andrew Kim solidified the Queen's win.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels began the game with strong ball control and a tight defensive starting line up, keeping the Toronto Varsity Blues from making runs on goal. The Queen's midfielders Noah Campagna (Ottawa, Ont.) and Milosh Stojanovic (Ottawa, Ont.) maintained a secure centre field, sending through-balls to the Queen's offence and setting up several shots on goal.

In the 27th minute, Michael Chang (Mississauga, Ont.) made a quick break down the left side of the field toward the Varsity Blues goal. Chang reached the Toronto 18-yard box but his shot on goal was blocked by the goalie Stefan Dusciuc, making for a disappointing offensive break.

Defender Cameron Mackinnon (Kingston, Ont.) made a solid stop on a one on one battle in the Queens 18-yard box in in the 42nd minute, holding the Varsity Blues from scoring in the first half. However, in the 45th minute, Queen's midfielder, Andrew Kim received a yellow card to close the first half.

To start the second half, the Tricolour come out with a quick attack on goal but were unsuccessful in their scoring attempt. The Gaels brought the intensity but unfortunately, in the 51st minute of the game, the Varsity Blues found a gap in the Queen's defence on the right sideline. Toronto forward Koosha Nazemi found the back of the Queen's net, making the score 1-0 early in the second half.

Although being down a goal, the Gaels continued their offensive pressure. In the 56th minute, Charlie Purcell (Comox, B.C.) made a run down the right sideline towards the Varsity Blues goal. Purcell sent a direct cross to the left side where Andrew Kim (Mississauga, Ont.) made a header to the bottom right corner of the Toronto net, tying the game at 1-1.

The Tricolour continued to play a strong defensive game and managed to push the ball through the Toronto defense.

In the 82nd minute, Junior Kwame Addai (Calgary, Alta.) used his speed and ball control to make a breakaway down left field towards the Toronto goalie. Addai took the shot just outside the 6 yard box across the net towards the bottom right corner, slipping it past the goal keepers fingers and brought the score up to 2-1 for the Gaels.

Possession of the ball was passed back and forth between Queen's and Toronto but the Varsity Blues were unable to tie up the game again. The Gaels end the game with a score of 2-1.
