Gaels take 19-point win in home opener over Guelph

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 9, 2018) – The Queen's Men's Basketball Team (2-2) bested the Guelph Gryphons (0-5) 83-64 on Friday night in the Gaels home opener at the ARC – Main Gym.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels jumped out to an 18-9 lead early on and took a 24-14 lead to the end of the first quarter on the strength of Quinton Gray's 9 points. In a low scoring second quarter, the Gryphons outscored the Gaels by a basket, keeping the game close and making it a 41-33 game at the half.

The Gaels were led in the first half by Quinton Gray with 16 points and Jesse Graham with 11, while the Gryphons were led by Craig Valeriote with 11 points. The Gaels shot an impressive 47% from the field in the first half and forced 10 Gryphons turnovers.

By midway through the 3rd quarter the Gaels had extended their lead to 15 points. The Gaels continually hassled the Gryphons defensively, forcing Guelph into several unnecessary turnovers and offensive fouls. Heading to the final quarter, the Gaels held a 67-47 lead.

The Gaels held strong in the 4th quarter preventing the Gryphons from sparking a comeback, although they did surrender the final quarter to the Gryphons 17 to 16.

At the final buzzer, the score was 83-64 for the Gaels, a convincing win which the Gaels desperately needed after a disappointing loss last weekend in Windsor.

The Gaels took advantage of the OUA's worst defensive team so far this season, shooting a very efficient 52% from the field and forcing 18 turnovers. The Gaels were led offensively by Jesse Graham with 22 points off the bench and Quinton Gray with 21.
