ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (November 30, 2018) – The Queen's Women's Basketball Team (7-2) defeated the Brock Badgers (3-7) 75-63 on Friday night at Bob Davis Gym.
GAME FLOW
Despite the Gaels opening with a strong 16-12 1
st quarter lead, the Brock Badgers would give the Gaels all kinds of trouble as the first half went on, holding the Gaels to just 27.5% shooting from the field and limiting
Marianne Alarie to just seven points on 3 for 13 shooting. Additionally, the Gaels gave up 22 second quarter points and turned the ball over eight times. The Badgers took a 35-33 lead to the half.
Fortunately for the Gaels, Head Coach
Dave Wilson was able to make adjustments at the half and the Gaels came out a different team in the third quarter. Wilson implemented a zone defense which limited Brock offensively to 28% shooting and created ten second half turnovers. Meanwhile, the Gaels were much more efficient with their shot selection, shooting an even 50% in the second half and storming away to a twelve-point victory.
Leading the way for the Gaels was
Marianne Alarie with 24 points and
Maddie Morris with 11 rebounds off the bench. Notably, the Gaels out-rebounded the Badgers 64 to 41, although they did turn the ball over 10 more times than the Badgers.
BY THE NUMBERS
25 – The Badgers scored twenty-five of their 63 points off turnovers.
30% – Both teams shot less than 30% from three.
17– The Gaels made seventeen free throw attempts.
