Queen's recent success has been one of the most memorable highlights in the program's history. From the team's U SPORTS University Cup birth in 2017 to a 19-6-3 record, one of the best in recent history, the Gaels have built a winning program. Now, they turn their attention to the 2018-19 season in hopes at making another run at the Queen's Cup.
The team is led by veterans
Spencer Abraham,
Slater Doggett and
Eric Ming who have been the key fixtures of the Gaels success over the past three to four years. Abraham is a two-time defenceman of the year including the 2017 season where he posted 26 points in 28 games. He has also been named an OUA East First Team All-Star in all four seasons as a Gael.
Slater Doggett has become the team's leading scorer with back-to-back seasons of 33 points as well as two straight All-Star nods (2
nd team in 2016, 1
st team in 2017).
Eric Ming has been a consistent offensive force through his four seasons as a Gael posting 103 points in 102 games.
However, as the Gaels do have a strong veteran presence throughout their lineup they will be without some of their key playmakers from last season. This includes
Warren Steele,
Darcy Greenaway and goaltender
Kevin Bailie who will be remaining on the team in an assistant coaching role. Bailie is a former OUA MVP, Top Goaltender, All-Star and Rookie of the Year will play a huge role in the development of two rookie goaltenders, Jack Flinn and Justin Fazio.
Flinn spent last season splitting time with the AHL's Ontario Reign and the ECHL's Manchester Monarchs. Meanwhile, Fazio spent last season as the starter for the OHL's Sarnia Sting before committing to Queen's. He spent the summer with the Detroit Red Wings organization during the NHL Prospect Tournament and training camp. Both goalies will be vying for the starting job as the season progresses.
Other notable recruits include Jared Bethune, Liam Dunda, Stephen Gibson, Mason Kohn, Owen Stout, Sam Hunter and Trevor Withers.
Bethune spent the last four seasons with the WHL's Prince George Cougars, serving as an assistant captain in the 2017-18 campaign. He set a career-high of 69 points in 71 games last season as well. Owen Stout spent five seasons in the OHL with the Kitchener Rangers and Oshawa Generals. He had a career-high 46 points in the 2015-16 campaign. They are just two of the younger group that will add to an already talented Gaels team.
With the veteran experience mixed with some young talent, the Gaels are poised to make another deep run in 2018-19.
Quote from the Head Coach:
"We lost some key veterans last season to graduation but with 9 first years coming in their is a youthful enthusiasm leading into the 2019-2019 season. We will be lead by our 5th year Captain Spencer Abraham and our leading scorer Slater Doggett, they will be looked upon to lead this group through a grueling OUA East," said head coach Brett Gibson. "Our goal is to be among the top teams in the OUA and be trending upwards leading into the playoffs"
