GAELS THIS WEEK - Men's hockey looks to shut down Ridgebacks Friday and Saturday in Kingston

GAME OF THE WEEK
Men's Hockey

The Queen's men's hockey team (9-4-3) returns to the ice this weekend at the Memorial Centre in Kingston as they will look to slow down the UOIT Ridgebacks (10-5-1) in a pair of contests.

The first game goes Friday night at 7:30 pm followed by a rematch on Saturday night also at 7:30 pm.

For the Gaels, they will need to find a way to slow down the red-hot Ridgebacks who have won eight straight games and sit tied with Queen's for the fifth spot in the OUA East.

The Gaels finished off the Fall semester with a pair of wins of their own and have also won five of their last six games. During that span, Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) has been on fire for the Tricolour. Through those six games, he has amassed seven goals, two assists and three game-winners.

The win streak for UOIT started with a victory over the Gaels back on November 10 and Queen's will look to put it to an end this weekend.

Queen's student tickets are FREE! Just bring your student card and swipe at the door, it's that easy.

Women's Basketball

After closing out the Fall term with a 9-1 record and a four-game win streak, the No.9 Gaels start up their 2018 portion of the schedule this weekend with the second best record in all of the OUA.

The Gaels start up Friday night when they visit the Nipissing Lakers (2-7) followed by a Saturday night matchup in Sudbury with the  Laurentian Voyageurs (2-7). Both games are set to tip-off at 6 pm.

The Gaels will look to control the glass this weekend as both teams struggle with rebounding while the Gaels lead the OUA in total rebounds per game (46.1) along with blocks per game (5.9).

Veronika Lavergne (Ottawa) will look to be a consistent force for the Gaels as the post has scored 10 or more points in every game so far this season. Her 44 offensive rebounds are the fourth most in the OUA, and she also leads the conference in blocks with 21.

Men's Basketball

Queen's men's basketball (7-3) finished off 2017 in style as they defeated the Gryphons in Guelph off a buzzer-beating shot from Jaz Bains (Brampton, Ont.). The Gaels will look to keep their momentum going into 2018 when they take on both the Nipissing Lakers (5-4) and No.7 Laurentian Voyageurs (8-1) this Friday and Saturday at 8 pm.

Despite a strong 7-3 record the Gaels sit in fifth in the OUA East and are just two points behind Laurentian, Ottawa and Ryerson. Nipissing and Toronto are also close behind the Gaels at 5-4 and 6-4 respectively making this weekends games that much more important.

Saturday nights game will pit two of the top scorers in the OUA against one another as the OUA leader at 25.7 points per game Kadre Gray will look to keep Laurentians win streak alive. The Gaels will see Bains take to the court with his third-best mark of 20.1 points per game.

Both Nipissing and Laurentian will also have to contend with Tanner Graham (Kingston, Ont.) who leads the OUA in rebounds (10.8), field goal percentage (69.1) and blocks (30).

Women's Hockey

The No.7 nationally ranked Gaels (8-3-0-1) currently sit atop the OUA standings with 31 points and are riding a nine-game win streak. This weekend, they will hit the road as they look to keep their win streak alive when they visit the Nipissing Lakers (7-0-4-1) on Friday night at 7:30 pm followed by an afternoon affair in Sudbury on Saturday against the Laurentian Voyageurs (3-1-5-3) at 3:50 pm.

Queen's hasn't lost a game since October, and their win streak includes victories over both of this weekends opponents which previously came in Kingston.

One of the big reasons for the team's success has been between the pipes as goaltender Stephanie Pascal (Sudbury, Ont.) leads the OUA in GAA (1.19), SV% (0.953) and win percentage (0.900).

A key matchup for Friday will be the offensive outputs of two of the conference's top scorers. The Lakers Maria Dominico leads the OUA in scoring with 15 points and is second in goals with nine. The Gaels will see Katrina Manoukarakis (Scarborough, Ont.) take to the ice who sits fourth in the OUA with 13 points and is tied for fourth in goals with eight.

On Saturday things start up bright and early at 10 am when the Gaels take on the hosts York and then conclude the round robin at 2 pm against Fanshawe College.
