TORONTO (January 28, 2018) – The Gaels suffered a 3-0 shut out against the Ryerson Rams in an away game this afternoon. The scores of each set were 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17 respectively.
GAME FLOW
In the first set, the Gaels got off to a rocky start, falling behind the Rams after allowing the Ryerson offence to find holes in their defence. The Tricolour managed to capitalize on scoring opportunities with kills by
Joel Rudd (Cambridge, Ont.),
Markus Trence (Hockley Valley, Ont.) and
Malcolm Prentice (Oakville, Ont.) but had difficulty catching the Ryerson lead. Ryerson continued to play their offensive strengths, and the Gaels ultimately lost the first set with a score of 25-21.
The second set of the game began in favour of the Gaels after a three-point serving rally for Trence put Queen's in the lead. The Tricolour maintained their lead for most of the set until the Rams caught a 6-1 streak to tie up the score at 20 all. The Gaels were unable to break Ryerson's momentum as they scored another 5-2 streak to take the set with a score of 25-22.
The third and final set kept a close score early on between the Gaels and the Rams until Ryerson broke the tie at 6-6. The Gaels struggled to break the Rams defence and unfortunately made six errors allowing Ryerson to keep their lead. Rudd, Trence, Prentice and
Mitchell Neuert (Toronto) managed to make several kills on the Rams, but it wasn't enough to surpass Ryerson and win the set. The set and the game ended in favour of Ryerson with a score 25-17.
Trence led the team with 12 kills and seven digs against Ryerson.
Jack Peckham (Hamilton) scored the only serving ace for the Gaels this game and accumulated three block assists as well.
