TORONTO (January 19th, 2018) - The Queen's Gaels (9-6) could not pull off the victory, on the road, against a tough Ryerson Rams (11-5) team in OUA men's basketball Friday night.
GAME FLOW
The game opened with a three-pointer by
Tanner Graham (Kingston, Ont.), after an offensive rebound by
Mike Shoveller (Arnprior, Ont.). The Rams would not remain silent and answered that shot with a seven-point run. The Gaels played a fine offensive game but struggled out of the gate. Mat Elcock (Waterdown, Ont.), managed to get a three-pointer to fall this quarter, and
Jaz Bains (Brampton, Ont.) was able to create some open shots, but the Rams played the better team game in the quarter. The Gaels were trailing at the end of the first quarter, 30-14.
The Gaels started the second quarter on fire.
Harry Range (Ottawa) drove in the key for a layup, and Bains knocked down a transition triple, off his own steal. The three-ball would continue to fall for the Gaels, as they hit four-in-a-row. The Gaels continued to press and ended the half out in front of the home Ryerson Rams 42-40.
The Gaels kept the Rams on their heels, to start the third quarter.
Tanner Graham managed to knock down a pair of three-pointers in the frame, along with Elcock and Shoveller. Queen's, however, struggled on the boards, allowing several offensive rebounds, leading to second-chance points. The Gaels played well enough, defensively, to not allow the Rams to go on a huge run, but the Rams still finished the quarter with the lead, 65-63.
Mike Shoveller knocked down a key tip-in from a missed shot, early in the quarter to keep the Gaels in it. He also got an impressive defensive rebound and found
Tanner Graham for a triple. The Rams would not go down quietly, scoring seven unanswered points, forcing a timeout by Coach Barrie. The Gaels were not able to recover, as the Rams continued to score in the paint. The final score for the night saw the Rams close out the Gaels 94-81.
