KINGSTON, Ont. (September 30, 2017) It was a rematch of the 2016 OUA championship as the Queen's Gaels (5-0) took down the OUA champion Guelph Gryphons (4-1) 34-26 to stay undefeated in regular season play.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels quickly got on the board against their rivals from Guelph as
Brendan Blaikie (North Vancouver, B.C.) punched in a try just three minutes into the match. After
Alex Colborne (London, Ont.) nailed the conversion it was a 7-0 lead for Queen's.
As another 10 minutes ran off the clock Queen's continued to put points on the board. After the Gaels took possession out of a scrum at the Guelph line,
Evan Underwood (Toronto) pushed through for a try.
Queen's added a third to open up a 21-0 lead before Guelph was finally able to break through the Queen's defence for a try.
Dylan Young (Toronto) got the Gaels another score just before the end of the half and it was 26-7 for the Gaels.
A determined Guelph side stuck with the Gaels in the second half and slowly started to cut into the deficit. At the 52 and 62 minute marks, Marcello Wainwright landed his first and second tries of the day cutting the Gaels lead down to just five at 26-21.Â
Colborne followed with a penalty goal to make it an eight point spread and the two teams traded late tries giving Queen's the 34-26 victory.
