Bains seals fourth-quarter comeback win over Guelph 88-86 with buzzer-beating jumper

GUELPH, Ont. (December 1, 2017) - The Queen's Gaels (7-3) travelled to Guelph to take on the Guelph Gryphons (2-8) on Friday night coming away with an 88-86 victory at the Gryphons Athletics Centre on a buzzer-beating shot from Jaz Bains (Brampton, Ont.).

MAJOR PLAYERS
The Gaels had big outings from Tanner Graham (Kingston, Ont.) who had a double-double with 25 points and 17 rebounds while picking up three blocks. Mike Shoveller (Arnprior, Ont.) put back 23 points of his own while hauling in 12 rebounds and Bains had 12 points. The Gryphons were led by the sharpshooting Taylor Boers who finished with 18 points shooting 6-11 from three.

GAME FLOW
Bains was able to find Shoveller for a jumper to put the Gaels out in front early 5-0. Daniel Dooley responded with a pair of three-pointers to put Guelph ahead in an evenly matched opening quarter.

Daniel Dooley hit all three of his shots from beyond the arc for the Gryphons in the frame, and Guelph led 20-18 after the first.

Guelph continued to shoot well on the night in the second frame and finished the opening half shooting 9-13 from beyond the arc.  Queen's had no trouble scoring themselves going 6-15 in the half.

After Bains stepped up and drained a triple to get the Gaels to within three, the Gryphons closed out the half on a 9-0 run which included a buzzer-beating shot from just inside the half court line.

In the third, Queen's kept hanging around not allowing Guelph to pull away with the game entirely.

Queen's was able to feed Shoveller in the post consistently in the frame, and he went to work. He finished with 10 points in the third alone giving the Gryphons matchup problems and controlling the boards.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Gaels trailed by just 10 points looking to make a game of it.

After Landon Brickenden (Summerland, B.C.) got Queen's on the board in the fourth with a three-pointer, it was the duo of Shoveller and Tanner Graham and pulled Queen's back into the game.

The duo scored 19 straight fourth-quarter points for the Gaels to make the score a one-possession game at 86-84 for Guelph.

After Bains stepped up with a bank-shot off the glass to tie the game, the Gryphons missed on a three-point shot with 16 seconds left.

Bains took the ball up the court and stepped inside the three-point line for a quick jump-shot that went straight in with no time left on the clock to seal the Queen's victory 88-86.
