KINGSTON, Ont. (November 25, 2017) – The Queen's Gaels (7-4-3) dropped a 4-1 decision to the Western Mustangs (4-8-2) on Saturday night. A night after coming away with a big win over the Windsor Lancers, the Gaels dropped a disappointing game against the Mustangs. Despite outshooting the Mustangs 40-25, the Gaels were unable to take advantage of their scoring opportunities.
GAME FLOW
Just 1:54 into the game, Mustangs forward Steven Beyers took advantage of some clumsy play along the Gaels blue line and scored a breakaway goal to open the scoring.
Warren Steele (Williamsburg, Ont.) answered back at 5:53 to tie the game 1-1 when he hammered home a one timer off a
Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) pass. Penalty trouble would bite the Gaels later in the period as the Mustangs got a pair of power play goals from Trevor Warnaar to take a 3-1 advantage into the second period.
The second period was an even one with Queen's holding the shot advantage over the Mustangs 10-8. Neither team was able to find the score sheet as the game would head into the final frame with the Mustangs still leading 3-1.
Queen's came at Western fast and furious in the third period, with numerous scoring opportunities on Mustangs goaltender Brendan McGlynn. After plenty of close calls and chances, Warnaar completed his hat trick into an empty net to seal the deal and finish the game off with a score of 4-1 in favour of Western.
McGlynn picked up the win in net for the Mustangs while
Jacob Brennan (Halifax, N.S.) made 21 saves in the loss for the Gaels.
