Varsity Club Weekend Recap – Women’s Squash undefeated at McGill

Women's Squash
The Queen's Women's Squash team kicked off the season with the Jesters East Sectional tournament hosted by McGill on Sunday. The Gaels swept the tournament with back-to-back wins; defeating the University of Ottawa 7-0 followed by a 5-2 victory over McGill. The Gaels saw five rookies participate in the opening event with outstanding results.

Men's Squash
Like the women's side, the Queen's men's squash team participated in the first east sectional of the Jesters Squash League on Sunday at McGill. Queen's beat Ottawa 4 matches to 3 and lost to McGill 6-1. Gaels rookie Alex Collins was a standout for Queen's, winning both of his matches in his debut at the #2 position.

Women's Lacrosse
The Queen's women's lacrosse team travelled to Waterloo for a 3-game set this past weekend, opening play with a match-up against the Brock Badgers on Saturday. The Gaels got off to a quick start, scoring the first four goals of the game and taking a 7-3 lead into the half. A tough defensive effort from Queen's held Brock to only two more goals in the second half while the Tricolour added six more for a 13-5 victory.

With an early morning start on Sunday, the Gaels lacrosse team took on the McMaster Marauders. The Gaels had a similar start to the game scoring four unanswered goals before McMaster got on the board. A gritty defensive effort kept the Marauders to just one goal to finish the game 14-1. With the win, Queen's clinched the top spot in the East heading into playoffs.

The final game of the weekend saw two top seeded teams go head-to-head – the Queen's Gaels and the Western Mustangs. The Gaels fell behind early, trailing 3-0 before netting two goals. Despite an offensive push, Western would take the game with an 11-2 victory over Queen's.

The Gaels will travel back to Kitchener Friday for an evening game at 8:45pm, marking the beginning of OUA weekend for the Gaels.

Field Hockey
The Queen's field hockey team made their way to Toronto this weekend to take on the Waterloo Warriors and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The back-to-back games marked the final regular season fixtures for the Gaels.

Starting out strong against the Warriors, the Gaels completely dominated both halves of the game. Powerful goals by rookies Cassidy Grimes, Isabelle Mastantuono, and Jacinta Mallon, as well as veterans Ciara Morrison, Leigh Janssen, and Abrie Girgis combined to total the score 7-0. Despite a previous tie against the Warriors early in the season, the Gaels swept Waterloo with a shutout from goalkeeper Amanda Thoo.

A quick turnaround had the Gaels take on the home team Varsity Blues in the afternoon. After a hard fought match with multiple game defining saves made by goalkeepers Amanda Thoo and Clara Gatien, the Gaels fell to the Blues 4-1. Leigh Janssen was the lone scorer to put Queen's on the scoreboard with a spectacular shot in rainy conditions.

Up next, the Gaels will prepare for the OUA Championship playoffs at the end of October.
