Queen's falls to Lions 83-74 in season opener

TORONTO, Ont. (November 11, 2016)- The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team dropped their regular season opening match on Friday night at the Tait Mackenzie Centre, falling 83-74 to the York Lions.

GAME FLOW
Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) scored a team-high 26 points, shooting 9-of-18 from the field and sinking eight of his 10 free-throw attempts in 30 minutes of court-time. Isse Ibrahim (Toronto) and Tanner Graham (Kingston, Ont.) added 13 and 12 points respectively, while Jesse Graham (Kingston) tallied 10 points in a losing cause for the Gaels.

Queen's, who shot 36.0% (27-75) on the night, dug itself into a hole early, going down by 15 points at the end of the opening quarter after the Lions scored 21 of the game's first 25 points.

After trading points with the hosts throughout the middle two quarters, the Gaels worked the deficit down to as little as five at the tail-end of the third quarter and at points throughout the final quarter, but were unable to overcome a potent Lions offence that shot 51.7% (30-58) on the night and 11-of-18 (61.1%) from beyond the arc.

Jayden Frederick scored a game-high 27 points for the Lions, who out-rebounded the Gaels 38-29.

The Gaels will look to split their weekend's matches on Saturday evening when they take on the Guelph Gryphons. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.

Queen's returns to Kingston next weekend for their home opening matches at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC). The Gaels will host Laurier and Waterloo on Friday and Saturday respectively. Both matches tip-off at 8:00 p.m. and can be seen live on OUA.tv.
