Gaels push No.3 Rams to extra time, but fall 1-0 to end the season

TORONTO (October 30, 2016) - In the OUA Quarter-Final on Sunday evening, Queen's battled the No.3 Ryerson Rams through 120 minutes, ultimately falling 1-0 in extra time.

GAME FLOW
After Ryerson got the better of Queen's twice during the regular season, the Gaels came out determined to play a tough game in the hope of making a deep playoff run.

In the first half, both teams played conservatively, not allowing many chances for the opponent to score. Tommy Hong (Oakville, Ont.) was buzzing through the opening 45 minutes, causing the Rams all kinds of problems with his relentless play on the ball, and picked up a yellow card as the half expired.

Heading into the second half with the game still scoreless, tempers started the flare, with chippy play starting from players on both sides. Ryerson earned its first card soon after the half got underway, with Robert Boskovic picking up a yellow. In the 75th minute, the Rams had chances off consecutive corners, but the Gaels escaped with score at 0-0. With four minutes left in regulation, Queen's had one of their best opportunities on a shot from Sam Abernethy (Halifax, N.S.), but it was turned aside by Ryerson's keeper.

In extra time, first year Gaels keeper Alex Jones (Comox, B.C.) saved a penalty kick to keep it scoreless. In the 109th minute, Boskovic was penalized for more rough play and was sent off with a red card, reducing the Rams to just 10 men on the field for the final 11 minutes of extra time. With eight minutes left in the second half of extra time, Jamie Baker scored for Ryerson to put the home team up 1-0. Queen's couldn't find an answer in the dying minutes, ending the Gaels season and the hope of an OUA medal for the tricolour.
