OTTAWA (October 21, 2016) - The Queen's women's basketball team was in Ottawa this weekend for the 2016 Metro Glebe basketball tournament, hosted by Carleton. The Gaels ended the weekend at 2-1.
SUNDAY
Queen's 60, Carleton 67
After a back-and-forth first half, the host Carleton Ravens got the better of the Gaels in a hard fought game, which ended 67-60.
Queen's was up 29-27 after the first half, winning the first quarter 17-15 before both teams scored 12 points in the second. Carleton jumped ahead in the third, outshooting Queen's 46.7% to 33.3% in the quarter. Despite their best efforts, the Gaels saw a three-point deficit heading into the final frame grow, ending the game down 67-60 to the Ravens, who won their home tournament as a result.
The Gaels were led by
Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) with 11 points and six rebounds.
Emily Hazlett (Fredericton) and
Abby Dixon (North Vancouver) scored 10 points each for the tricolour. Dixon contributed a team-high seven rebounds, while Hazlett grabbed five of her own.
After going 2-1 this weekend, Queen's will round out their preseason schedule next weekend at UQAM and Ottawa.
SATURDAY
Queen's 73, Concordia 65
A strong first half pushed the Gaels past the Concordia Stingers on the second day of action at the Metro Glebe tournament, hosted by Carleton.
After winning the first two quarters, Queen's went into halftime up 38-30. The Stingers hung around the second half, matching the Gaels point-for-point in the third and fourth quarters, but were unable to come back and take the game away from Queen's.
Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) had another stellar shooting performance, going 8-11 from the field and 4-5 from the free throw line to end the game with a team-high 20 points. Under the basket,
Robyn Pearson (Toronto) made her presence felt, hauling in nine rebounds and scoring 11 points on 5-6 shooting. As a team, Queen's shot an impressive 47.5% from the field, despite missing all five three-point attempts.
The Gaels are back in action against the host Carleton Ravens on Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
FRIDAY
Queen's 85, Thompson Rivers 57
The Gaels got things started at the Metro Glebe tournament taking on the Thompson Rivers Wolf Pack who compete in the Canada West conference of U Sports. Queen's controlled the play for the majority of the game, setting the pace early with a 22-16 lead after the opening quarter.
The Gaels ran away with the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Wolf Pack 24-4 in the frame and took a 46-20 lead into half. From there, Queen's finished off Thompson Rivers 85-17.
Veronika Lavergne (Kingston, Ont.) had a strong game for the Gaels with 13 points and nine rebounds while
Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) shot 7-8 from the floor for 17 points while adding six rebounds.
Up next the Gaels will take on the Concordia Stingers on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
