Gaels Suffer Loss to No. 8 UOIT 2-1 on Friday Homecoming Weekend

KINGSTON Ont. (October 14, 2016) – The Gaels (8-4-1) suffered a 2-1 loss at home in a game against the UOIT Ridgebacks (11-2-1) at Miklas McCarney Field.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels started the game with a hard battle for possession in the first half. A free kick on the right side of the field in the seventh minute of the game presented a perfect scoring opportunity for Tara Bartram (Vancouver). Bartram placed the header into the back of the net with an assist from Rachel Radu (Ottawa, Ont.). The Ridgebacks came back with a strong goal in the eighth minute of the game. Queen's held their own to end the first half, competing in one-on-one battles and keeping the score tied at one.

To start the second half, Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.), had two incredible saves and maintained the momentum from the first half. Queen's obtained better possession during the second half but it was UOIT that snagged a quick goal from inside the 18 yard box to take the lead. The UOIT goal stole the momentum from the Gaels and the Ridgebacks maintained possession for most of the second half. In the 88th minute, the Ridgebacks acquired the first yellow card of the game. The Gaels played strong defence and ended the game positively with plenty of shots on the Ridgebacks goalie.

BY THE NUMBERS
1 – one yellow card during the game
0 – no offside calls were made against either team
9 – nine saves for Madison Tyrell

FINAL SAY
"I thought we had a few problems in some parts of the field where we didn't start the game very well, but the ladies sorted through that and played very well in the first half. It was the 20 minutes in the second half that really did us in and we couldn't score."  Dave McDowell
