TORONTO (February 21, 2015) – The Gaels (12-8) wrapped up their 2014-15 OUA regular season on Friday night with a 81-65 win against the Toronto Varsity Blues (10-10).
The Gaels were led by
Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) with 18 points in their win.
Abby Dixon (North Vancouver) and
Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) followed up Wright with 13 points of their own. Liane Bailey was the leader for the Varsity Blues scoring 18 points while Abena Addo scored 13 points.
The Gaels exploded onto the court and took the first quarter scoring 27 points while the Blues only put up 13 points. The second quarter was more of the Gaels offensive dominance as they outscored the Blues 20-16 and pulled further ahead into a 47-19 lead at halftime.
The Blues used the break to settle their defence and began matching the Gaels shot for shot. The third quarter was a tight battle as the Blues began to find their way to the Gaels basket, slowing their momentum and outscoring them by one point. Queen's held onto their lead heading into the final quarter up 65-48 against the Blues. The fourth quarter was another close match with the Blues outscoring the Gaels 17-16 giving the Gaels the opportunity they needed to clinch the 81-65 win.
The Gaels will now head into the first round of the OUA playoffs scheduled for Wednesday, February 25. The times and locations are to be determined be sure to check OUA.ca for the latest updates.
