Toronto Steals Final OUA Playoff Spot From the Gaels With a 87-79 Victory

TORONTO (February 21, 2015) – The Gaels were edged out of the OUA playoffs by the Toronto Varsity Blues (6-13) who won their final regular season game 87-79 against Queen's (5-14) this Friday night.

The Gaels were led by Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) who scored a game high 20 points and Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) who finished off his five year university basketball career tonight with 18 points. Tanner Graham (Kingston, Ont.) grabbed a double-double performance with 15 points and 11 rebounds. For the Blues Devin Johnson led with 18 points and 13 rebounds while Julian Clarke picked up 17 points of his own.

With seven lead changes and both teams matching 45% shooting from the floor it was a close game the whole way through. The Gaels hit the ground running in the first quarter and grabbed their largest lead of the game, although the Blues managed to catch up by the end only down 24-23 heading into the second quarter. The Blues quickly bypassed the Gaels and started to pick up their offence outscoring the Gaels 18-11 to put them ahead 41-35 at the end of the first half.

The Gaels answered in the third quarter with the pendulum swinging back in their favour as they put up 19 points and kept the Blues at 16. The final frame opened with the Blues still in the lead, the Gaels trailing 57-54.

It was a physical fourth quarter as the two teams fought for the final spot in the OUA playoffs, the Gaels sending Toronto to the charity stripe 35 times in their frustration to reclaim the lead. The Blues began to pull away as the minutes counted down and they scored their largest lead of the night (13 points) with 1:23 to go of regulation time. The Gaels kept attacking the basket, increasing their fouls in the final seconds but the Blues had already clinched their 87-79 win and were able to let the clock run out on their final regular season game.

With this win the Varsity Blues grab the 12th spot in the OUA playoff RPI rankings which will send them to the First Round game scheduled for February 25. The Gaels will end their 2014-15 season with a 5-14 record.
