SUDBURY, Ont. (February 15, 2015) -
Kelly Jackson (Scarborough, Ont.) netted the overtime winner as the Queen's men's hockey team defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 2-1 Sunday night to take their series 2-1 and advance to the OUA East semifinals.
The Gaels dropped the first game of the series at home but were able to rebound with a pair of road victories in Sudbury 3-1 Friday and 2-1 in overtime tonight. The Gaels will now draw their rivals from McGill in their OUA East semifinal series.
In the first period it was another tight checking game as neither team wanted to give up the opening goal based on the two previous games ending in with little scoring being done. The Voyageurs ended up being the first team to find the back of the net in the opening frame to grab the 1-0 lead after converting on the man advantage. Laurentian captain Vincent Llorca was credited with the goal, his first of the playoffs.
The Gaels netted the equalizer in the middle period as Gaels captain
Corey Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.) was not outdone by his counterpart and collected the tally.
Kris Grant (Wilton, Ont.) and Jackson were credited with the assists on Bureau's first of the playoffs.
Neither side could add the go-ahead goal as overtime was required to determine the winner. Queen's clinched the series victory at the 3:06 mark of the overtime period as Jackson registered his second of the playoffs. Grant and
Braeden Corbeth (Oakville, Ont.) collected the assists.
Final shots for the night totalled 36-30 in favour of Laurentian.
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) started in net for the Gaels, earning the 35 save victory while Laurentian's Alain Valiquette suffered the 28 save loss.
