Gaels This Week - Basketball welcomes Ottawa in games of the week while playoffs start for men's hockey and volleyball

The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this week. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.

GAMES OF THE WEEK

Women's Basketball
This weekend the Gaels (9-6) host the Carleton Ravens (7-8) on Friday at 6pm and then welcome the Ottawa Gee-Gees (10-5) on Saturday at 6pm in the ARC main gym in the game of the week.  Last weekend Queen's suffered a single road loss against the No.9 McMaster Marauders, 45-74.  Despite the loss, Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) had a season best performance, leading the Gaels with 11 points while Robyn Pearson (Toronto) led on the defensive front grabbing 12 rebounds.  As a team the Gaels are ranked eleventh in the CIS for averaging a total of 41.5 rebounds per game.  Queen's saw both of this weekend's opponents in exhibition prior to the season as they defeated Ottawa but fell to Carleton.  The Gaels are gearing up for their second last weekend of the regular season play before OUA playoffs begin.

Men's Basketball
This weekend the Gaels (5-10) host the No.1 Carleton Ravens (13-2) on Friday at 8pm and then welcome the No.2 Ottawa Gee-Gees (14-1) on Saturday at 8pm in the ARC main gym for the game of the week.  Last weekend Queen's suffered a single road loss against the No.4 McMaster Marauders, 49-71.   Despite the defeat, Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) led Queen's with a game high 17 points and seven rebounds.  The Gaels were supported by Patrick Street (Etobicoke, Ont.) with 12 points and Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) with nine points and five rebounds.  Currently, Queen's is ranked first in the CIS averaging 31.2 defensive rebounds per game and twelfth for averaging 40.5 total rebounds per game.  The Gaels haven't seen either of this weekend's opponents this season but will be preparing to take on two very skilled teams as they play their second last weekend of the regular season.

The Gaels will welcome groups from the Knights of Columbus on each night this weekend to take in all the action.

PLAYOFFS

Men's Hockey
This week the Gaels (13-12-1) start the first round of the OUA playoffs as they take on the Laurentian Voyageurs (14-9-3) in a best of three matchup.  The first game is today, Wednesday, at 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre, the second game will be Saturday at 8:30pm in Sudbury and if a final game is necessary it will take place on Sunday in Sudbury.  Last week Queen's finished up their final week of regular season strong as they defeated the RMC Paladins 5-1 and UQTR 4-3 in shootout.  Against RMC, Brett Foy (Niagra Falls, Ont.) led the Gaels offensively with a pair of goals while Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) added a goal and an assist to give the Gaels the Carr-Harris Cup.

In the close match against UQTR, Patrick McGillis (Calgary) knotted the score in the final minute of play and after two scoreless overtime periods the game was forced to a shootout where Abraham deposited the shootout-winner.  Going into the playoff the Gaels are a team to keep an eye on as they create numerous scoring opportunities.  Currently they rank seventh in the CIS for totaling 984 shots on net this season.

The Gaels have faced this playoff opponent twice earlier this season, first in defeat but then redeemed themselves with a huge 4-1 win later on in the season.

This weekend the Gaels (12-8) head to Toronto to take on the York Lions (13-7) on Saturday at 2pm in the first round of the OUA playoffs.  Last weekend the Gaels played their final games of the regular season and came out with a loss to the No.1 McMaster Marauders 3-0 but finished strong as they defeated Guelph 3-1.  Despite the loss to the Marauders, Markus Trence (Orangeville, Ont.) was the leading scorer for the Gaels offensively finishing with 16 points and a .400 attacking percentage.

Tomlinson was once again brilliant for the Gaels in the regular season. He finished as the team leader in kills with 202 and points with 260. His serving has been one of the best in all of Canada finishing 3rd in the CIS in services aces per set averaging 0.44 while the mark led the OUA conference as well. His kills per set mark of 3.31 was the fifth best mark in the OUA this season. The Gaels will look to take down a York Lions team that has only been able to take one set off the Gaels so far this season.

Women's Hockey
This weekend the No.5 Gaels (15-4-3) hit the road as they take on the No.3 Western Mustangs (18-1-3) on Friday at 7pm and the Windsor Lancers (13-5-4) on Saturday at 7:30pm.  Last Saturday Queen's defeated Laurier 3-1 but on Sunday fell to Waterloo 0-2. Against the Golden Hawks, Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) netted the first two tallies and Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) added the empty-netter as the Gaels went on to earn the 3-1 victory.  Griffin is the top scorer for the Gaels so far this season and is ranked fifteenth for her 11 goals.  In the game against Waterloo, Queen's could not find the back of the net despite the final shots for the afternoon totaling 26-13 in favour of the Gaels.  Queen's faced both of this weekend's opponents earlier this season in heated competition as one game when to shootouts while the other was a tight overtime win.  As the Gaels enter their final weekend of the regular season they will be edging to defeat their competition.
