KINGSTON, Ont. (October 4, 2015) - The Gaels women's soccer team (4-2-5) concedes a last minute goal to draw 1-1 against the Carleton Ravens (3-4-3). GAME FLOWThe Gaels didn't take long to get on the score sheet Sunday afternoon when
Tianna Lombardo (Calgary) scored the opening goal from a strike from the top of the 18 yard box in the first minute for the game. The game settled down after the early go ahead goal from the Gaels with both teams playing pressuring back and fourth. Throughout the first half Queen's controlled most of the possession. The Gaels almost doubled their lead in the 30th minute with another quality scoring chance by Lombardo from a strike inside the 18 yard box.
The second half saw both teams playing a strong defensive game early on. The Carleton's offence began to get pressure in the middle of the second half but the Gaels defensive tandem of
Micah Vermeer (Grimsby, Ont.) and
Kyra Steer (South Surrey) prevented any quality chances on net. Queen's goalkeeper
Madison Tyrell (White Rock) made a key save in the 70th minute off a strike in the 18 yard box. The Gaels almost put the game out of reach in the 75th minute when substitute
Rachel Radu (Ottawa) crossed a ball into the 6 yard box right onto
Jenny Wolever's (Toronto) foot but the shot went over the net. That miss came back to hurt the Gaels late in the game when Carleton's forward Abby Nicastro was able to sneak through the Gaels defence and dribble around Tyrell to net the game-tieing goal in the 91st minute.
FINAL SAY"It was a disappointing result, they fought hard in the second half so you have to give them credit. Some of our players were terrific so tough one to lose two points like that but we go back to the drawing board for next week" -
Dave McDowell, Head Coach
