Gaels Top Voyaguers at Home

KINGSTON (October 23, 2015) - The Queen's Gaels took down the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday night at the Memorial Centre 2-0 in OUA women's hockey action.

Game Flow

The first period was a back and forth affair, as each team had their fair share of chances on the rush and with sustained pressure in each end. It was the goaltenders for each squad showing their stuff, each turning away all the shots they faced. Emily Toffoli for Laurentian and  Caitlyn Lahonen  (Sharon, Ont.) each stopped 13 shots to keep the game scoreless going into the second period.

The Gaels were the first on the board in this one, as a rebound chance by  Katrina Manoukarakis  (Oakville, Ont.) put the Gaels up by one just over two minutes into the middle frame. The Voyageurs pressed and had some more sustained pressure, as did the Gaels. With less than one minute left in the second it was none other than  Nadia Larocca  (Mississauga, Ont.) scoring on a wicked slap shot from the faceoff circle, giving the Gaels a 2-0 lead heading into the third.

Each team managed to get multiple chances in the first 10 minutes of the final period, both off the rush and with some sustained zone pressure. The goaltenders continued to stand tall to keep the game at a close 2-0 score. The Voyageurs had a chance late in the game with a 5 on 3 powerplay, but it was the Gaels coming up with another big penalty kill.

Final Say?

"Laurentian is playing well and playing tight, we knew it'd be a close one... I think we're certainly fortunate Caitlyn is on her game, when a game is close the other team feels they're in it. If we can pot a few early the 2nd and 3rd go a bit better." - Matt Holmberg, head coach.
