KINGSTON, Ont. (October 13, 2015)- After an 11-day hiatus, the Queen's Gaels women's basketball team resumed their pre-season schedule against the defending national champions on Tuesday evening at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC), coming up on the losing side of a 75-71 result to the Windsor Lancers.
OUA first team all-star
Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) garnered a team-high 15 points, going 6-of-15 from the floor while
Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) and
Emily Hazlett (Frederiction, N.B.) each hit double-digits, recording 13 points and 10 points respectively. Third-year
Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) was one point short of a double-double, and picked up a game-best 10 rebounds on the night.
Andrea Kiss and Emily Prevost each tallied 20 points in helping the Lancers overcome a small deficit heading into the final quarter and on to the victory. After the teams went into halftime with the five-time defending national banner-winners leading by eight, the Gaels responded by holding Windsor to just 10 points in the third stanza on 23% shooting and going on a 15-0 run that lasted just over four minutes. By the time Windsor snapped their scoreless run, Queen's held a five-point advantage.
The Gaels clung to a 51-49 advantage after 30 minutes of play, but after the Lancers drew even early in the fourth, the CIS champions used a mini-streak to rail off seven straight points. A couple of timely three-pointers down the stretch by Carly Steer helped pace Windsor to the victory, dropping Queen's non-conference record to 3-2.
The hosts shot 38.6% (27-70) overall from the floor, compared to 46.6% (27-58) from the Lancers.
Queen's continues their preseason play this weekend at the ARC when they welcome Carleton, UQAM, and Memorial to Kingston for the Tindall Invitational Tournament.
The women kick off the regular season on Saturday, November 7 when they host the York Lions at the ARC. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
