TORONTO (January 17, 2015) - The No.4 women's hockey team earned their 12th win on the season after topping the York Lions 3-2 Saturday afternoon on the road in Toronto.
The Lions opened the scoring in the first frame on a powerplay tally from Steffei Samuel. The Gaels quickly responded with a powerplay marker of their own as
Danielle Girard (Sarnia, Ont.) buried her first of the season. Queen's continued to generate offensive pressure, capitalizing on another scoring opportunity mid-way through the period to grab the lead. Captain
Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) was credited with the tally.
The Gaels added their third unanswered goal of the afternoon just over two minutes into the middle period as
Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) collected her fourth of the year. This proved to be the eventual game-winner as Queen's held on for the 3-2 victory.
Final shots for the afternoon totalled 30-25 in favour of Queen's. Goaltender
Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) started in net for the Gaels, earning the 23 save victory while York's Megan Lee was charged with the 27 save loss.
The No.4 Gaels (12-3-2) return to action Friday night when they take on the No.6 Guelph Gryphons (11-2-3). Puck drop is set for 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre.
