Gaels down Laurentian 3-0 in home opener

Kingston, Ont (September 6, 2014) - The Queen's women's soccer team defeated Laurentian 3-0 in their home opener at Miklas-McCarney Field on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was highlighted early on by great defensive play from both squads. Neither team was able to generate scoring chances as both teams featured strong defensive play. The Gaels broke through in the 36th minute when Tianna Lombardo (Calgary) buried a penalty shot after being taken down in the box. Laurentian's Julie Lopez attempted to even the score in the final minute of the half but was denied on a great save by Gaels keeper Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.).

The Gaels dominated the second half of play, outshooting Laurentian 13-3. Putting balls toward the net worked out in the Gaels favour, as they scored in the 54th minute after a miscommunication led to an own-goal by Laurentian. The Gaels added an insurance marker in the 75th minute when Jackie Tessier (Winnipeg, Man.) buried her fourth goal of the season on a beautiful pass from Matija Skoko (Toronto, Ont.). Tessier is now just two goals back of tying the Gaels women's soccer all-time scoring record.

The Gaels (2-0) look to continue their strong play as they take on Nipissing (1-1-1) at 11:00am on Sunday at Tindall field.
