KINGSTON (September 6, 2014) –
Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont) led the No. 3 Gaels (1-0) in a win against the York Lions (0-1) in their OUA home opener on Saturday at Nixon Field.
An offensive first half for the Gaels,
Gillian Pegg (Oro-Medonte, Ont.) put the first try on the board followed by a conversion from McEwen. The Lions gained significant forward momentum in response only to be shut down by
Loren Baldwin (Amherstview Ont) provoking the second try and conversion of the game, both by McEwen.
The Gaels finished the half strong with a try from Gillian along with a try and two conversions from McEwen giving them a comfortable 28-0 lead against the Lions.
Wasting no time, Baldwin scored a try in the second minute of the second half followed soon after by a try from
Karley Heyman (Harrowsmith Ont.). The Lions tried to fight their way back as Petra Woods overcame the Gaels defense, putting the first try for the Lions on the board.
To maintain their lead, the Gaels scored three more tries from
Melanie Judges (Ottawa), McEwen and
Miranda Seifert (Regina) and three conversions from McEwen and
Erin Geddes (Lindsay Ont.). The Lions attempted to catch the Gaels once more as Emma Jada scored one final try in the 40
th minute, but in the end the Gaels conquered with a 61-12 victory.
The Gaels will continue their season next Sunday when they travel to Hamilton to battle McMaster at 1:00pm in OUA women's rugby action.
