No. 3 Gaels Score a 74-10 Victory Over Trent, McEwen sets new program career points record in win

KINGSTON (September 27, 2014) – The No. 3 Gaels (3-1) defeated the Trent Excalibur (2-2) 74-10 this Saturday on Nixon Field.

The Gaels had the kick-off and immediately showed offensive dominance on the pitch. With some beautiful passing, they pushed past the Excalibur defensive line and Karley Heyman (Harrowsmith, Ont.) put the first try on the board followed quickly by Gillian Pegg (Oro Medonte, Ont.) with a try of her own.

After Trent kicked the ball deep into their half the Gaels fought back and, with an assist from Melanie Judges (Ottawa), Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) scored the third try for the Gaels.  Before closing up the half, Danielle Underwood (Toronto) and Miranda Seifert (Regina) both added tries to board. McEwen successfully completed all 5 conversions, giving the Gaels a lead of 35-0 at half.

The Gaels continued their momentum in the second half with a quick turnover by McEwen finished with a try by Catie Ryan (Kamloops, B.C). Emma Chown (Barrie, Ont.) was able to break through for a clear run putting down another try for the Gaels. Trent refused to back down and turned up their offensive pressure with attacks along the Gael goal line pushing Karlie Robinson across to put down the first try for the Excailbur. The Gaels returned with two more tries from Pegg and McEwen.

The final quarter of the game was a rough battle for continuous possession with turnover after turnover from both teams. Allison Barbalinardo caught an interception off a Gael pass and had a straight run to the goal line putting the second try on the board for Trent. However, the Gaels were able to add tries from Ryan, Chown and Hannah VanLuven (Inverary, Ont.) putting the final score at 74-10.

Finishing with 24 points in the game for Queen's, McEwen now has 164 in her career which is a new team record as she passes former Gael Andrea Wadsworth.

Catch the Gaels in action next Saturday when they take on Western at 7:00 pm on Nixon Field.
