KINGSTON, Ont. (September 25, 2014) - The Gaels defeated St. Lawrence on Thursday night 69-54 in their first exhibition game of the preseason.
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) had a standout performance with a double-double, scoring Queen's an outstanding 32 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Other notable performances for the Gaels came from
Martin Kulinich (Maple, Ont.) and
Mike Shoveller (Arnprior, Ont.) who rounded up nine and eight defensive rebounds, respectively.

With six lead changes, both teams struggled to maintain any momentum from quarter to quarter. Queen's was on defense early in the game, as St. Lawrence led 14-11 going into the second quarter. The Gaels came back to gain a 25-21 lead at halftime. Â
The second half saw Queen's gradually pull away with a six point lead at the end of the third quarter and then to finish off with a 69-54 victory. The Gaels showed both offensive and defensive dominance, as they collected 80 percent of the rebounds under their own basket, and got to the free throw line 35 times, compared to St. Lawrence's eight.
As part of the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money and awareness for curing ALS, head coach
Stephan Barrie of Queen's and Barry Smith of St. Lawrence agreed before the game that the winning coach would dump ice water on the losing coach. After the Gaels victory, Barrie joined Smith, both taking the soaking. St. Lawrence raised over $270 from admissions for the ALS Society of Canada.
Next up for the Gaels is the Tindall Tournament where they host Guelph, Trinity, Western and McGill from October 3 to October 5. Â
