Gaels Surrender Two Late Goals in 3-2 Loss to Ryerson

TORONTO, Ont. (September 20, 2014) - The Queen's women's soccer team suffered their second consecutive loss of the season after being defeated 3-2 on the road by the Ryerson Rams.

The Gaels were able to grab the early lead when Jackie Tessier (Winnipeg) registered her fifth goal of the season in the sixth minute of play. Tessier, with 52 goals in her Gaels career, is now a single goal shy of tying the Queen's women's soccer all-time scoring record. The lead was short-lived, however, as Ryerson's Nicole Paiva buried a goal two minutes later to even the match. Neither team could generate additional scoring chances in the half as the game remained tied 1-1.

Queen's broke through in the 67th minute, when Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.) deposited the ball into the back of the net to put the Gaels ahead 2-1. It appeared that Almeida's second of the season would be enough for Queen's to capture the victory as the game entered its final minutes. But in the 89th minute of the match, the Gaels surrendered a penalty kick. Ryerson's Alex Rodkin stepped up and scored to tie the game 2-2. Then, as the Rams continued to apply offensive pressure, Rodkin found the back of the net again, just before the final whistle, to win the game 3-2 for Ryerson.

The Gaels (3-2-1) will remain in Toronto to take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (4-1-1) on Sunday afternoon as they look to avoid losing additional ground in the OUA East division standings.
