Gaels fall to Varsity Blues 2-1, will face Lancers in playoffs

BOX SCORE TORONTO (February 9, 2014) - The No. 5 Gaels closed out their regular season with a tough loss to the No. 9 Varsity Blues, 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

Both the Gaels and Varsity Blues came out strong, both fighting to earn a win to close out their regular season and lay claim on the number three spot in the OUA. The game remained scoreless in the early minutes of the first period. The Gaels opened the scoring with a power play goal from Alisha Sealey (Elora, Ont.) with 6:26 to go in the first.

The Gaels led 1-0 entering the second period, and maintained their lead well into 40 minutes of regular game play. Toronto got on the board in the third period, with a power play goal from Alie Brind' Amour McClure (Waterdown, Ont.), bringing the score to an even 1-1.

Toronto's McClure put up another goal to bring the score to 2-1 with minutes remaining in the game. The Gaels did not have enough time to come back, resulting in Toronto winning 2-1.

Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) finishes her regular season career second all-time in points for the OUA and Gaels with 153. Elizabeth Chiasson who played for the Gaels from 2001-05 holds the top spot with 155 career points.

The Queen's Gaels will take on the Windsor Lancers in round one of OUA playoff action this week.
