BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (February 6, 2014) – RMC snapped the Gaels six-game Carr-Harris Cup winning streak with a 2-1 win on Thursday night at the K-Rock Centre in front of 2,230 fans.
In goal for RMC, Evan Deviller stole the game for the Paladins, stopping 52 Gaels shots to pick up the victory and earn his team's MVP award. With the win, RMC (3-19-3) keeps their playoff hopes alive.
Queen's looked strong early, earning a 1:46 five on three with Patrick Pinder and Anthony Farrow in the penalty box for RMC.
Joey Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.) opened the scoring for Queen's, benefiting from Gaels two-man advantage with a slap shot from the slot. Three minutes later, RMC's Brendan Wright evened the score with a power play goal of his own, going top shelf over
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) while
Stephane Chabot (Rockland, Ont.) sat in the box for tripping.
RMC had the best chance on the power play in a scoreless second period, but Bailie stoned Scott Domenico to close out the penalty kill. As Bailie sprawled out on the ground, he threw out his glove to snag the puck and keep the game even at one all heading into the final frame.
Deviller made some of his best saves down the stretch, as the Gaels pressed for the go-ahead goal.
Blair Wentworth (Calgary) was robbed, staring at a wide-open RMC goal, when Deviller made a diving glove save. RMC rode their goaltender's momentum, and Kyle Phillips netted the game-winner at 17:16 in the third.
Queen's outshot RMC 53-24, with Bailie making all 22 saves for the Gaels.
Patrick McEachen picked up MVP honours for the Gaels with his strong defensive play and physical presence.
The Gaels are back in action Saturday night, hosting No. 5 UQTR at the Memorial Centre at 7:30pm.
