Gaels This Week - Gaels set for full slate of playoff action in Hockey and Basketball

| By:
The Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this week. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action, including home playoff games for men's and women's hockey and women's basketball.

Men's Hockey
The Queen's Gaels men's hockey team skates into the playoffs with home ice advantage for their opening round matchup with the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Earning a national ranking earlier in the year the Gaels wound up with a fourth place finish in the OUA East division tying their franchise record for wins in a season with 17 to finish 17-6-5. Ottawa was close behind the Gaels with a 17-9-1 record and the series between the two teams was even at 1-0-1 with the home team taking each win in a shootout. The Gaels will be looking to win their first playoff series since the 2009-10 season when they took game one of their series against Carleton. The team's last playoff series win was back in 2003-04 in a sweep of rival RMC. Queen's had 57 goals against this season which was second to only Alberta in all of the CIS and is their best franchise mark since the 14 game season in 1974-75 when they allowed 48.

Player to watch

KEVIN BAILIE | #30 | G | QUEEN'S

Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) is a player to watch for the Gaels. One of the main reasons behind the defensive success this season is the starting goaltender Bailie. He finished with an 11 win season with a 1.98 GAA (4th in CIS) and a 0.934 SV% (2nd in CIS). Combined with Chris Clarke (Fall River, N.S.) the duo finished with the best team save percentage in the CIS at 0.934.

Women's Hockey
The No. 8 Gaels swept their opening round series against Windsor in dramatic fashion as Kyla Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont.) scored 6:33 into the second overtime period to give the Gaels a 3-2 win and the sweep. Up next for Queen's in the OUA semifinal round is a familiar foe in the Guelph Gryphons as the two teams have met in the playoffs in three of the last four years with the Gaels winning two series including last season. It was the OUA semifinals last year when the two teams met as well and Queen's upset Guelph at home 4-2 to snap their 16 game win streak. Guelph currently the No. 3 team in the nation is riding a 14 game winning streak as they enter this series. Guelph and Queen's split their regular season series 1-1 with the home teams winning each time. Queen's won 3-1 in Kingston and the Gryphons 3-2 in Guelph. Courtenay Jacklin (Regina) paces the Gaels scoring leaders in the playoffs with three points in two games while Guelph is led by Averi Nooren with two points in two games.

Player to watch

MARY COUGHLIN | #24 | D | QUEEN'S

Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) is a player to watch for the Gaels. An anchor on the blue-line for Queen's the Gaels assistant captain is just as gifted offensively as defensively. She finished with an assist in the Gaels overtime win over Windsor on the power play and often plays in all situations for the Gaels. In last year's playoff matchup with Guelph it was Coughlin who came through with the game winner to snap the Guelph win streak.

Women's Basketball
The No. 10 Gaels enter the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in the country. Queen's enters the playoffs having won seven straight games and nine of their last 10. Finishing with a 16-6 record to tie the team's franchise mark the Gaels took first place in the OUA East division and will host a semifinal game on Saturday against the lowest remaining seed from the quarter-final games Wednesday. This week Queen's enters play in the CIS top ten rankings as well for the first time since the 2003-04 season when they were also ranked No. 10. With an extra few days of rest compared to their opponent the Gaels will look to use home court to their advantage. In Kingston the Gaels went 9-2 at the ARC main gym. Last year the Gaels won their quarter-final game to move on to the semifinal hosted by Ottawa. The Gee-Gees took the win but a large contingent returns from that group and will look to move the Gaels to the OUA East final, which would be hosted in Kingston, for the first time since 2006-07. The Gaels continue to be one of the best teams from the three in the CIS and at 32.5 percent are seventh in the CIS from beyond the arc.

Men's Basketball
The Gaels enter their OUA quarter-final match against the No. 8 Ryerson Rams, a team the Gaels closed out their regular season against losing 71-61. The Rams also took their previous meeting in Kingston back in January 81-61. The Gaels last playoff win was a 79-76 overtime thriller against Ryerson back in 2009-10 in Kingston. Without all-star guard Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) Queen's will need to rely on a balanced attack moving the ball around to keep up with the Rams high powered offense. The veteran duo of Nikola Misljencevic (Ottawa) and Mackenzie Simpson (Ottawa) will be looked upon heavily along with second-year guards Roshane Roberts (Vaughan, Ont.) and Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) to carry much of the load.

Track and Field: At the Provincial Championships hosted by York University, some of the Gaels will be hoping to nail a spot on the podium in individual events, while some others will be hoping to earn a spot at the CIS Championships by improving their national rankings. The 3000m runners are stealing show, with five Queen's runners ranked in the top 12 in the OUA. In particular, Julie-Anne Staehli and Victoria Coates are ranked 1st and 2nd respectively (2nd and 3rd in the CIS). Both these Women have their sights set on OUA and CIS gold, and both will be representing Canada at the World University Cross Country Championships in Uganda later next month. On the Men's side, David Cashin looks to have a good chance at qualifying for CIS in the 3000m with his current 10th place ranking, while teammates Alex Wilkie and Jeffrey Archer are on the bubble, and may need faster races to punch their tickets to CIS in Alberta.

Nordic Skiing: OUA Championships take place this weekend in North Bay, Ontario and are hosted by Nipissing. The event will start will go Saturday and conclude Sunday.

Swimming: The CIS Championships take place at the University of Toronto this weekend. The Gaels will have one swimmer Margo Bacher representing the tricolour in the breaststroke.
