Gaels Down Toronto 63-58 on the road

| By:
BOX SCORE TORONTO (February 14, 2014) - The Queen's women's basketball team (15-6) defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues (11-10) 63-58 in Toronto on Friday night. With the win the team now increases their winning streak to six straight games and is one win away from tying their franchise record for wins in a season.

At half time, the point margin was still in the single digits with the Gaels leading the Varsity Blues 25-20. Nearing the end of the third quarter, Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) drained back to back three-pointers to give Queen's the momentum they had been searching for all game. This offensive surge helped the Gaels out-score Toronto 22-13 in the third quarter, giving them a 47-35 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a completely different game, with both teams fighting for ever point and possession. Toronto made their final push to close in on the Gaels midway through the fourth. With a few made shots and forcing Queen's to make some careless turnovers, Queen's only held a four point advantage with under two minutes left in regulation. As the time was winding down, Emily Hazlett (Fredericton) and Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) both completed and-one plays on simultaneous posessions to keep the points rolling in while Toronto was on their hot streak. The Varsity Blues were unable to respond, giving Queen's their sixth straight victory.

Jenny Wright (Kington, Ont.) and Hazlett were relentless with their on-ball pressure, helping to cause 20 Toronto turnovers, and forcing the Varsity Blues best offensive threat, Jill Stratton, to only 12 points. Wright led the Gaels with 15 points, followed by Bullard's 12 and Boag's 10. Liane Bailey of Toronto led all scorers with 17 points.

The women play their last regular season game Saturday night against the Ryerson Rams at 6pm.

They will host an OUA East semifinal game on Saturday February 22 at 6pm for tickets visit www.gogaelsgo.com/tickets
