WINDSOR, Ont. (February 13, 2014) – The No. 9 Queen's Gaels took game one of their best-of-three quarter-final series 2-1 over the Windsor Lancers at the South Windsor arena on Thursday night.
The Lancers made it interesting with a goal in the final minutes to cut the lead to one but Queen's held on for the win.
Courtenay Jacklin (Regina) had a goal and an assist to lead Queen's in the game.
The teams bunkered down in the opening frame limiting the scoring chances. The Lancers were able to muster a few quality shots towards Gaels starting netminder
Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) with their two power plays in the period but the Gaels weathered the storm.
Queen's was unable to convert on their two power play opportunities as well with the penalty kill units of both teams proving their worth. Queen's held a 12-5 advantage in shots after the first.
In the second period the Gaels found themselves stuck in their own end for much of the first half of the frame. After killing off another penalty Queen's got a power play chance of their own.
Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) fired a shot on goal and the puck bounced off the pad of Lancer goaltender Marissa Kozovski and right to a wide-open
Kyla Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont.) at the side of the goal for an easy tap in goal. Jacklin added the other assist on the goal for the Gaels.
The Gaels once again outshot Windsor in the second period 12-9.
Queen's kept their offensive momentum going into the third and McKellar was involved on the play once more. Only 2:23 into the period McKellar fed a pass through a defender right out front to Jacklin. She was then able to deke to the her backhand and lift the puck past Kozovski.
The Lancers had a power play chance late and were finally able to solve Dodd-Moher. Adalena Tridico scored for Windsor to bring the Lancers to within one with 3:53 remaining.
Windsor pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker but Queen's was able to hold on and secure the 2-1 win.
Dodd-Moher stopped 28 of 29 shots for the win.
The Gaels now return to Kingston Saturday where they will look to take the series sweep in game two starting at 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre. For tickets visit
