No.5 Gaels Fall To No.3 Gryphons 3-2

BOX SCORE GUELPH, Ont. (February 1, 2014) - The No. 5 Gaels (15-3-4) lost 3-2 to the No. 3 Guelph Gryphon's (19-3-0) in a battle of two of the countries top women's teams on Saturday afternoon.  
 
The Gaels were 0 for 3 on the powerplay for the night, while Guelph scored on two of their three opportunities. The Gryphon's out-shot Queen's 32-21 on goal.
 
Micaela Smith (Cobourg, Ont.) was the first player to put a goal on the scoreboard mid-way through the second period. She was assisted by Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) to make the score 1-0. With only four seconds left on the clock in the second, Guelph equalized the score by Kelly Gribbons sinking one past Queen's Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) on a powerplay.

The third period did not fare well for the Gaels as Shilton and Landman of Guelph scored back to back goals, taking the lead to 3-1. Despite the deficit, Queen's would not relent. The offensive push led to a goal by Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) of the Gaels in the fifteenth minute of play and was assisted by Danielle Girard (Sarnia, Ont.) and Smith.Queen's could not muster a tie in the last few minute of play and lost a close 3-2 decision. The Gryphon's increased their winning streak to 10 straight games with the win.

With one assist in the game McHaffie is now four points away from tying the all-time OUA and Queen's scoring record.
