THUNDER BAY, Ont. (November 7, 2014) – The Gaels lost their OUA season opener 54-51 against the Lakehead Thunderwolves this Friday. Despite their loss the Gaels saw strong performances from
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) who scored a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as well as from
Mike Shoveller (Arnprior, Ont.) who put up 12 points for Queen's.
The Thunderwolves were led by Ryan Doornick and Dwayne Harvey who both contributed 11 points to their winning score.
It was a close game with seven lead changes and the teams leaving the first quarter tied 10-10. The Gaels grabbed the lead in the second quarter but the Thunderwolves managed to catch up, putting them ahead 21-20 at halftime.
The second half saw the Thunderwolves gain the upper hand and stretch the lead to 46-37 going into the final frame. The Gaels turned up their offensive pressure outshooting Lakehead 14-8 in the last quarter however the Thunderwolves 53 % accuracy from the charity stripe gave them the edge they needed to secure a 54-51 victory by the final buzzer.
The Gaels will be back in action November 14 for their Home Opener against the Waterloo Warriors. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 pm in the ARC Main Gym.
