TORONTO (November 15, 2014) -
Andrew Wiebe (Thunder Bay, Ont.) collected both goals for the men's hockey team as the Gaels edged the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 on the road Saturday night at Varsity Arena.
The Varsity Blues opened the scoring in the first frame on a powerplay goal from Patrick Marsh. Queen's responded in the second period as Wiebe deposited a powerplay tally of his own to knot the score at 1-1.
Corey Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.) and
Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) registered the assists on Wiebe's third of the season.
Wiebe deposited the decisive goal of the game in the first minute of the final frame on a shorthanded effort. Goaltender
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) and
Warren Steele (Williamsburg, Ont.) were credited with the assists getting the puck up ice to Wiebe. Final shots in the game totalled 29 to 22 in favour of Queen's.
Bailie collected his third victory in nine starts this season, turning aside 21 shots for the night. Toronto's Michael Nishi stopped 27 shots in the loss.
The Gaels (6-5-0) return to action Friday night when they battle the Lakehead Thunderwolves (4-6-2). Puck drop is set for 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre.
