Gaels This Week - Basketball Home Openers Friday are Games of the Week

The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.

to Lakehead

In their home opener for the 2014-15 season, this weekend the No.8 Gaels(0-1) host Waterloo (0-2) on Friday at 6pm and Laurier (1-1) on Saturday at 6pm in the ARC MainGym.  Last weekend the Gaels lost to Lakehead 82-76 in their first OUA regular season game.

Queen's took an early lead but strong offense from Lakehead allowed for the Thunderwolves to overtake the Gaels and control the match. Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B) and Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaels, each scoring 19 points and Hazlett grabbing six steals. Still early in the season, under 2013-14 OUA East Coach of the Year Dave Wilson, Queen's will look to continue last year's success with a more experienced lineup as they hope to end the weekend with a pair of home wins.

Men's Basketball
The men's team starts their home portion of the 2014-15 season, this weekend the Gaels (0-1) host Waterloo (0-2) on Friday at 8pm and Laurier (1-1) on Saturday at 8pm in the ARC Main Gym.  Last weekend the Gaels lost to Lakehead 54-51 in their first OUA regular season game in Thunder Bay.  It was a close game with seven lead changes but the Thunderwolves took the lead 46-37 heading into the final frame.  Queen's turned up their offensive pressure outshooting Lakehead 14-8 in the last quarter however the Thunderwolves 53% accuracy from the charity stripe gave them the edge they needed to secure a 54-51 victory by the final buzzer.  The Gaels saw strong performances from Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) who notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Mike Shoveller (Arnprior, Ont.) put up 12 points for Queen's.

Women's Volleyball
This Friday the Gaels (3-3) head to Waterloo to play a single match against the Warriors (1-6) at 6pm.  Last weekend was a game of threes for Queen's, as they beat RMC in three straight sets on Friday and then lost to Ottawa in three straight sets on Sunday.  On Friday, the Gaels took advantage of communication errors by the Paladins and Shannon Hopkins (North Vancouver, B.C.) led the scoring for Queen's with seven serving aces and 15 kills.  The Gaels had a rough start on Sunday with 10 errors in the first set but they managed to turn things around in the second set leveling the score at 21-21 before the Gee-Gees managed to pull away taking the last two sets.  Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) was the most efficient Gael in her limited playing time, hitting four kills on seven total attacks, while also picking up a service ace and four digs. You can see the Gaels take on Waterloo live online at OUA.tv

Men's Volleyball
On home court this weekend the Gaels (2-3) host a pair of games, first against the No.8 Guelph Gryphons (6-1) on Saturday at 3pm followed by a game against the Waterloo Warriors (3-4) on Sunday at 3pm in the ARC Main Gym.  Redeeming themselves from a pair of preseason losses against Waterloo, last weekend the Gaels played a single road match against the Warriors, beating them in three straight sets, 25-15, 25-20 and 25-15.  Queen's came out flying with attacks from Philippe Goyer (Ottawa) and Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.).  Goyer had a game-high of 17 kills, while Tomlinson had 11 kills and two serving aces.  Queen's will look to pull the upset against the No.8 Gryphons who currently hold down the top spot in the OUA and then knock-off a Waterloo team that will be looking for redemption from last weekend.

Men's Hockey
This weekend the Gaels (5-4-0) head to Toronto to take on Ryerson (6-3-1) on Friday at 7:30pm and Toronto (4-6-0) on Saturday at 7:30pm.  Last Friday the Gaels suffered a tough 1-0 loss to No.9 Carleton but came back on Saturday with a blowout win against RMC 14-4. The goal total marked the most for Queen's men's hockey in a game since 1985.  For the first time this season Queen's was held off the scoresheet in a shutout by the Ravens, Gaels goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) started in net collecting 32 saves in the loss.  On Saturday Queen's dominated the play tallying six goals in the first period alone.  Blair Wentworth (Calgary) opened the scoring for the Gaels and finished the game with a hat-trick. Gaels win over Brock

The No.4 Queen's Gaels (6-1-2) host the UOIT Ridgebacks (5-3-1) at 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre this Saturday.  Last Saturday Queen's suffered their first regulation loss of the season against the No.8 Gryphons 1-0; Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) made her fifth start of the season in net for Queen's, registering 24 saves in the loss.

On Sunday the Gaels ended their three game winless streak with captain Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) scoring the decisive goal as the women's hockey team defeated the Brock Badgers 4-3 on the road.  The win also marked the first for Claire Warren (Halifax) in her career as she made her CIS debut.
