No.3 Gaels Defeated in Shootout Versus Nipissing

North Bay, Ont. (November 1, 2014) - The No.3 Gaels suffered their first loss of the 2014-15 season after falling in a shootout to the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first frame on goals from Carly Marchment and Mariah-Leigh Fell.

Queen's found the scoresheet in the final period of play as Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) and Megan Farrell (Barrie, Ont.) buried back-to-back goals in a 50-second span to knot the score. The game would eventually be settled in a shootout as neither team could deposit a game-winner during regulation or overtime.

Queen's found the back of the net in the first two rounds of the shootout as Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) and Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) converted on their attempts. McKellar had an opportunity to seal the victory in the third round but could not beat Nipissing goaltender Jacqueline Rochefort. The match was eventually decided in the fifth round after Gaels captain Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) failed to capitalize on her attempt. Kayla Carter scored the final shootout goal for the Lakers.

Goaltender Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) started in net for the Gaels, collecting 18 saves in her first loss of the season. Final shots for the match totalled 20-15 in favour of Nipissing.

The Gaels (5-0-1) return to action Sunday afternoon when they travel to Sudbury, Ontario to battle the Laurentian Voyageurs (0-5-1).
