OTTAWA, Ont. (October 26, 2014) - The No.1 Gee-Gees were too much for the Gaels women's soccer team in OUA playoff action on Sunday, as Queen's was eliminated with a 1-0 loss in Ottawa.
Â
History repeated itself on Sunday afternoon, as the last time the Gaels failed to bring home an OUA medal was due to a 1-0 loss to the Gee-Gees on October 26, 2008.
After the Gaels beat top ranked Ottawa in last year's playoffs in penalties, the Gee-Gees turned the tables to eliminate Queen's from the playoffs this year. Julia Francki got Ottawa on the board 30 minutes into the match amid high pressure from the Gee-Gees, who outshot the Gaels 12-3 in the opening half.Â
Queen's upped the pressure in the second half, forcing Ottawa's Cynthia Leblanc to make six saves in the latter 45 minutes.Â
Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.) had the most opportunites for the Gaels, recording four shots of Queen's seven shots on goal. Leblanc collected the clean-sheet on eight saves, while Gaels keeper
Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) stopped seven shots in the loss.
The Gaels finished the regular season with a 9-4-3 record, and close out the 2014 season with a 10-5-3 overall record.
