Lahonen and the No. 5 Gaels hang on to beat Brock 3-2

BOX SCORE ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (January 31, 2014) - The No. 5-ranked Queen's women's hockey team (15-2-4) defeated the Brock Badgers (8-13-1) 3-2 in St. Catharine's Friday night.
 
Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) started off the scoring for the game only 2:52 into the opening period, putting one past Brock's Jenna Sosnoski off an assist by Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.). The Badgers responded thirteen minutes later with Leigh Vanderveen scoring on a powerplay. Queen's did not let the tie game linger for long as Nadia Larocca (Mississauga, Ont.), assisted by Kyla Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont.) and Alisha Sealey (Elora, Ont.), scored her first goal of the game only 33 seconds later.
 
The second period went scoreless for the first 10 minutes until Brock's Brittany Cabral scored at 10:34. The tie game quickly turned to a 3-2 lead for the Gaels when Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) scored in the fourteenth minute off assists by Emily Gervais (Kamloops, B.C.) and Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.).
 
Both teams went scoreless in the third period. Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) had 24 saves in net for the Gaels.
 
The women are back on the ice for a big game against the No. 3 ranked Guelph Gryphons (18-3-0) at 2pm on Saturday in Guelph.
