The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this week. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action including the game of the week that pits the No. 5 women's hockey team against the No. 4 Laurier team on Saturday.
Game of the Week:
Women's Hockey: No. 5 Queen's hosts No. 4 Laurier at 7:30pm on Saturday at the Memorial Centre in a battle of two women's hockey titans. The Gaels also play a 7:30pm home game on Friday against Waterloo.
Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) and
Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) lead the Gaels offense with 24 and 21 points on the season, good enough for seventh and ninth in OUA scoring, respectively. Gaels goalie
Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) is fifth in the OUA in goals against average and save percentage. Both of Laurier's goalies, Amanda Smith and Kayla Brown, crack the OUA top five with their stellar goals against averages.
Men's Hockey: The No. 10 Gaels are on the road for a single 7pm game in the nation's capital on Friday, looking for revenge against No. 7 Carleton, who handed Queen's their first regulation loss of the season on January 10th. The men's hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak, their longest of the season, with a 4-0 shutout win over Concordia on Saturday, and continued to regain momentum with a 3-0 victory at RMC on Tuesday.
Men's Basketball: The men's basketball team (7-7) is in tough this weekend, heading on the road to play country's No. 1 and No. 2 teams, Carleton on Friday and Ottawa on Saturday. Both games tipoff at 8pm. Carleton is undefeated this season, and Ottawa's only losses came at the hands of their cross-town rivals, the Carleton Ravens. The Gaels are looking to bounce back after a pair of losses last weekend to Laurentian and Algoma.
Women's Basketball: It's a battle of the OUA East's top three teams in women's basketball this weekend, as Queen's heads to Ottawa to play the Carleton Ravens at 6pm on Friday and the No. 10 Gee-Gees on Saturday, also at 6pm. The Gaels are fresh off a pair of road wins at Laurentian and Algoma, and look to continue their streak against their tough opponents in the nation's capital.
Women's Volleyball: The Gaels travel to play winless Nipissing Saturday afternoon at 2pm before heading to play No. 7 York in another 2pm match on Sunday. Among non-liberos,
Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) is second in the country with 173 digs. Queen's is coming off a split last weekend at Windsor and Western, where they topped the Mustangs 3-1. The Gaels also split their last meetings with York and Nipissing, blanking the Lakers and falling to the Lions 3-1.
Men's Volleyball: The men's volleyball team continues their road run with games Saturday at Nipissing and Sunday at York, with both games set for 4pm. The Gaels (6-8) sit two spots back of York (10-4) and are well ahead of Nipissing (2-12) in the OUA standings. Against York, Queen's seeks revenge for a five-set loss in November. Defense will be key to the Gaels success, as Queen's is eighth in the CIS in digs per set, led by
Ivo Dramov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria), who is second in the country with 2.94 digs per set.
