KINGSTON, Ont. (September 7, 2013) –
Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) led the No. 4-ranked Queen's Gaels with two tries and one penalty goal in their 33-21 win over McMaster in OUA women's rugby action at Nixon Field Saturday. The third-year center had an outstanding game as the Gaels cruised to the win in their first league game.
McMaster started the game strong, with Sarah Farquharson (Niagara Falls,Ont.) scoring the first try and Stephanie Black (Ottawa, Ont.) kicking a successful conversion. The Gaels quickly clawed their way back into the game with McEwen scoring the first try for the Gaels off of a seven yard run. Queen's kept the momentum going with
Kayla Roote (Peterborough,Ont.) and McEwen scoring two more tries to give the Gaels a 15-7 lead at the half.
The second half opened with
Jenna Ledson (Bolton,Ont.) and
Claudia DiFrancesco (Brantford, Ont.) scoring tries for the Gaels. McEwen added some more points to the board in the 64
th minute of play with a penalty kick.
The Marauders made one last surge in an attempt to clinch the win from the Gaels. McMaster's Stephanie Black scored two tries and made two successful conversions.
The Gaels ended the game with
Miranda Seifert scoring the final try, resulting in a 33-21 win for the Gaels.
The Gaels return to action next Friday where they will visit York in OUA women's rugby action.
