Gaels Shutout Laurier to Open Championship Defence

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 7, 2013) – Liam Underwood (Toronto) led the Queen's Gaels with two tries, four conversions and a penalty goal in a 48-0 shutout over Laurier in OUA men's rugby action, Saturday. The fourth-year fly-half had an outstanding game as the Gaels cruised to the win in their first league game.

Underwood put the first points on the board with a penalty goal in the early minutes of the game. This started a 24 point scoring streak for the Gaels. Andrew Carr (King City, Ont.) scored the second try in the sixteenth minute, followed by a conversion kicked by Underwood. Underwood followed with a try of his own and another conversion. Adam McQueen (Canmore,Ont.) scored the final try of the half, with Underwood kicking the conversion. The score at the half was 24-0.

Laurier attempted to fight their way back into the game at the beginning of the game, but could not get passed the Gaels back lines. The Gaels went on another scoring run after Brenden McGovern (Ottawa) scored a try in the 49th minute, Underwood kicked the conversion to give the Gaels a 31-0 lead. Dave Worsley (Vancouver) added to the board for Queen's with a try, followed by tries by Underwood and Dave Williams (Toronto). Adam Mcqueen kicked a successful conversion to close out the game with a 48-0 win for the Gaels.

The Gaels return to action next Sunday where they will play Waterloo in OUA men's rugby action.
