KINGSTON, Ont. (September 28, 2013) -
Chris Michael's (Ottawa) last-minute heroics broke the deadlock as the Gaels topped the Trent Excalibur 1-0 on Saturday at the West Campus Field.
Â
The score was level through the first 45 minutes, as the Gaels keeper
Dylan Maxwell (Vancoouver) saved all three shots he faced, while Trent's goalkeeper David Ellis went untested.
Â
The Gaels held the majority of possession throughout the game, but only started to connect with their strikers late in the second half.
Â
In the 81
st minute,
Greg Simmons (Whitby, Ont.) beat his man down the right wing and crossed the ball into the box, where Michael blasted it off the crossbar. Michael continued to press, hitting the crossbar again a few minutes later with a diving header from a
William Twardek (Ottawa) cross. Michael was rewarded in the 85
th minute, when his shot sailed over Ellis and into the net.
Â
Trent tried to respond with a strike from Riley Brennan, but Maxwell was able to hold on for the save and the clean-sheet.
Â
The Gaels (4-2-2) will be at West Campus again on Friday, when they play the RMC Paladins (1-4-1) at 5:30pm.
