Gaels secure playoff spot, end losing skid with 80-68 win over Lady Vees

BOX SCORE SUDBURY, Ont. (February 8, 2013) - The Queen's Gaels (7-12) secured a playoff spot with their 80-68 win over the Laurentian Lady Vees (5-13) on Friday night in Sudbury. Four of the Gaels five starters finished with double digit points led by guard Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) with a team high 21.

The Gaels came out firing early in the first quarter on the Lady Vees scoring the first nine points of the game. Hanna Koposhynska (Mississauga, Ont.) scored four of the first nine for Queen's on their way to a 20-8 first quarter lead. 

Boag and Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) got the Gaels lead to as much as 16 in the second frame with a pair of three pointers early on. The Lady Vees managed to reel the Gaels back in to under 10 points with a strong showing from Adrienne Moreau who had 11 of her game high 24 points in the quarter. The Gaels responded with late buckets to take a 45-34 lead at the half.

Queen's crusied the rest of the way outscoring the Lady Vees 22-21 in the third and equaling the 13 points from the home team in the fourth for an 80-68 win.

Sydney Kernahan (Calgary) was strong on the boards for the Gaels finishing with a game high 11 rebounds to go along with 12 points for a double-double. The Gaels strong shooting was the difference as they shot an effective 44% from the field compared to Laurentian's 36%.

With the win Queen's ends their six-game losing skid for their first win since they last topped the Lady Vees 74-69 on January 12 in Kingston.

The Gaels travel to Toronto to take on York tomorrow at 6 p.m. to close out their regular season.
