BOX SCORE OTTAWA (February 23, 2013) -- The No. 9 Ottawa Gee-Gees took control after the first quarter on their way to a 72-44 win over Queen's to advance to the OUA East final next weekend.
The Gaels were led by
Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) who put up 16 points and six rebounds for the Gaels while
Robyn Pearson (Toronto) added eight points, six rebounds and two blocks of her own. The Gee-Gees distributed the ball well on the night with four players recording double digits. Jenna Gilbert (Ottawa) led the way with 18 points to go along with four rebounds and three blocks in the win.
A Pearson lay in evened the game at 4-4 early on and Wright followed up after a Gee-Gees turnover with a three pointer to give Queen's an early 7-4 lead. Ottawa responded with a quick basket, but Wright came right back knocking down her second straight three pointer to keep the Gaels ahead 10-6.
Ottawa capitalized on Gaels turnovers and missed shots on their way to a 10 point run putting the Gee-Gees ahead 16-10 thanks to Ariane Scantland (Gatineau, Que.) who had four points, an offensive rebound an assist and a steal on the run.
Wright came up with a key steal as Queen's looked to get some momentum going but missed their shots,
Sydney Kernahan (Calgary) picked up an offensive rebound but the Gaels couldn't turn it into points.
Catherine Traer (Chelsea, Que.) closed out the quarter making one of two free throws giving a 17-12 lead to the Gee-Gees.
Tatiana Hanlan (Gatineau, Que.) opened the second quarter with a three pointer putting Ottawa ahead 20-12. The Gee-Gees worked the ball around the court well, using up the shot clock and another three pointer extended their lead to 23-15.
Ottawa made all five of their free throw shots in the quarter and limited the Gaels offensively to only nine points, their lowest output in any quarter on the night. At the half the Gee-Gees sat with a comfortable 36-20 lead over Queen's.
Ottawa closed out the Gaels in the third, starting out with a 4-0. Pearson was a bright spot for the Gaels in the early part of the third quarter making a nice move in the paint and getting the hoop and harm for a three point play after converting the free throw. Ottawa quickly shut down the Gaels momentum responding with five straight points.
Another quick start to a quarter saw the Gee-Gees with five quick points to open the final frame. They added 12 more to their score to close out the Gaels 72-44.
The Gee-Gees now advance to the OUA East Final where they will take on the Carleton Ravens next weekend.
