BOX SCORE TORONTO (February 20, 2013) --
Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) finished with 24 points as the Queen's Gaels won their OUA quarter-final matchup with the Ryerson Rams 86-64.
Boag led all scorers in the game with 24,
Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) threw down 18 points and rookie
Emily Hazlett (Fredericton) chipped in 12 points.
Nicole Morse (Cottam, Ont.) had a game high 13 rebounds.
In the early going the two teams kept a strong offensive pace. Boag gave the Gaels leads of 3-2 and 8-6, establishing her three-point shooting early. The Rams responded after each Gaels lead and went up 18-14 after a Kenesh Pingue-Giles (Winnipeg) jumper and pair of Kelsey Wright (Brampton, Ont.) free throws. The Gaels took control of the game after that going on a 10 point run. A broken play gave Boag an open look in the corner where she sank a three. A Hazlett cut to the hoop for an easy lay in and a
Lisa Minutillo (Brantford, Ont.) three made it 24-18 for the Gaels. After one, the Gaels sat comfortably ahead 24-18 in a high tempo first quarter.
Boag started the second frame out continuing to hit from beyond the three point line. The Gaels point guard put Queen's up 29-23 and fellow Kingston native
Jenny Wright capitalized on a Rams turnover for an easy two. Queen's opened up a ten point lead on a well executed play where Boag picked up a steal and got the ball up court to Wright who made a slick pass for an assist to a wide open
Rachael Urosevic (Waterloo, Ont.) under the basket for an easy two.
Boag and Silvana Jez (Kitchener, Ont.) fired three point attempts back and forth in the quarter but it was Boag coming out ahead and closing out the second half with 22 points putting Queen's ahead 48-35 at the break.
The Rams got off to a quick start in the third grabbing five of the first seven points to cut the lead to 10, but it was all Gaels from there on out. Wright added six points while
Hanna Koposhynska (Mississauga, Ont.) chipped in five putting Queen's out in front 70-48 to end the third. Queen's scored 22 points for the second quarter in a row and held the Rams to their lowest total of the game at 13.
The Gaels rebounding was a strong point in the second half as Morse hauled in 11 of her game high 13 rebounds in the second half alone.
The Rams could not find an answer for the Gaels strong start and the two teams each pitched in 16 points in the fourth, giving the Gaels an 86-64 win.
Queen's will now move on to the OUA semifinal this Saturday where they will take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees at 6PM in Ottawa.
