BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (February 15, 2013) - The Queen's Gaels hosted game two of their OUA best-of-three series with the No. 9 Carleton Ravens on Friday night in KIngston. Despite Queen's getting out to an early 1-0 lead, the Ravens managed to come back to get the 2-1 win and clinch the series two games to none.
After Carleton jumped out in front in the first game of the series the Gaels turned the tables in game number two.
Yannick Laflamme (Thetford Mines, Que.) beat Ravens starting netminder Ryan Dube (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) at the 2:33 mark of the opening frame to give the Gaels the upper hand early.
Taylor Clements (Toronto) added the assist for Queen's.
The Ravens responded on the powerplay, Matthew Stanisz (Burlington, Ont.) fired a point shot through traffic in front of the Gaels net to beat Gaels starting goaltender
Riley Whitlock (Calgary). The first period finished with a flurry of penalties, the Gaels unable to take advantage of a five-on-three and Ravens a five minute power play. Carleton held a 14-8 shot advantage after one period.
Queen's penalty kill unit went to work once again early in the second period and the Gaels were successful blocking the Ravens shots and keeping them to the outside of the slot and crease area. The Gaels applied pressure of their own but Dube controlled the puck off of Gaels point shots not giving any second chance rebounds. The Ravens were given another power play opportunity mid-way through the frame but could not beat Whitlock. Ravens captain Ryan Berard (Niagara Falls, Ont.) was stoned by the left pad of the Gaels netminder at the side of the Queen's goal before a Gaels defender sent the Ravens captain sprawling off his feet into the corner. Whitlock stopped all 12 shots he faced in the second frame while Dube was up to the task as well blocking 11.
In the third the Ravens took their first lead of the game as Timothy Billingsley (Orleans, Ont) scored on a shorthanded two-on-one rush, one-timing the pass from Michael Folkes (Burlington, Ont.). The Gaels could not find a way to beat Dube in the final minutes and the Ravens hung on to sweep the series with a 2-1 win.
Whitlock made 35 saves for the Gaels while Dube stopped 29 of 30 shots faced for the win. The Gaels power play finished 0 for 6 while the Ravens went 1 for 6 with a shorthanded goal.
